Cover Letter and Resume

My name is Jacob Ham and I am a third-year mechanical engineering student at York
University, seeking full time employment for the coming summer. I am responding in
particular to the Product Development Intern listing as I believe it closely matches many of my interests and technical proficiencies.

I am currently studying full time but was most recently employed by Paragon Systems, which produces automated end-of-line testers for car seats. My responsibility was mainly the mechanical fabrication of these machines, but I was thoroughly exposed to the product’s design process.

Though much of my experience lies in the realm of manufacturing/testing, it
has always been within the automotive industry and so too lie my professional interests. As such I have long been aware of Magna’s stellar reputation within the industry (and
mechanical engineering circles).

Since gaining experience from several project-based courses at York, I’ve realized what I hope to be a natural aptitude for design analysis/improvement. As I’ve learned, design is often a circular and iterative process requiring constant collection of performance data and implementation of the necessary changes. I can thus fully appreciate the importance of review and solution analysis for car parts that must be entirely reliable for public safety.

I also believe that my analytical capabilities would make me an excellent candidate for the position. Many of my classes have required the extensive use of Excel, and I have grown comfortable with much of its more sophisticated functionality. I am also highly organized and detail oriented by nature, with propensity for visual data representation and pattern recognition.

While I work well alone, I very much enjoy collaborating with others to accomplish team objectives. I like to think that my peers and past coworkers would describe me as
dependable and an excellent communicator of questions/ideas. I take pride in punctuality and professionalism, and expect this would make me well suited for Magna where I understand the culture to be likewise. I am available to work from the beginning of May to the end of August, before returning to complete my degree. Please contact me by phone or email to arrange an interview. I eagerly await a response, and thank you for any consideration.
